About the Author

The Dawn of Dynamic Programming
Richard E. Bellman (1920–1984) is best known for the invention of dynamic programming in the 1950s. During his amazingly prolific career, based primarily at The University of Southern California, he published 39 books (several of which were reprinted by Dover, including Dynamic Programming, 42809-5, 2003) and 619 papers. Despite battling the crippling effects of a brain injury, he still published 100 papers during the last eleven years of his life. He was a frequent informal advisor to Dover during the 1960s and 1970s.

Professor Bellman was awarded the IEEE Medal of Honor in 1979 "for contributions to decision processes and control system theory, particularly the creation and application of dynamic programming." The IEEE citation continued: "Richard Bellman is a towering figure among the contributors to modern control theory and systems analysis. His invention of dynamic programming marked the beginning of a new era in the analysis and optimization of large-scale systems and opened a way for the application of sophisticated computer-oriented techniques in a wide variety of problem areas ranging from the design of guidance systems for space vehicles to pest control and network optimization."

I don't know what it is about 'educated' people that makes them terrible at writing books, but this is another prime example. This book isn't written by an individual, but by a group of people who comprise the Board For Certification Of Genealogists. They've stated way too much that falls under the 'obvious' category, and practically nothing about 'HOW'. Practical is the key word. There is noting practical about this book. It focuses on the 'high level' concepts of what makes up Genealogy Research (or any research for that matter), but fails miserably on how to apply those concepts. Are you looking for a resource that will show you a suggested format for a Family Group Data Sheet? That's a very standard form that is used to document ones research, but it isn't covered in this book. That would be too 'specific' for its scope. In summary, and in my opinion, this is not a useful book.

This is the gold standard text and a go to volume every genealogist needs to conduct themselves as a professional. I thought I was a professional, until I read this book. it has forever changed how I conduct family history. Anyone who takes what they are doing seriously, will pick it up, and learn from the wisdom it contains and the practical aspects it has to teach you. It also made doing my research more methodical, logical, and less time consuming.

I own the Kindle version of this book, which I refer to often. It reminds me to conduct thorough research, document my findings, and be honest about my sources, evidence and conclusions. Genealogy Standards are the guidelines that the best genealogists follow. As a serious amateur, I become a better genealogist ever time I read the volume.

I bought this book before I began the path to certification. Unfortunately, I had to put my certification on the back burner. In spite of that, I read the book anyway and continue to refer to it for clarification and guidance as I run my business. It is a MUST have for ALL genealogists. It simply makes us better.

It's exactly what it claims to be, and the book arrived in perfect condition. If you're concerned about dry/heavy reading, it's not bad at all. If it's been a while since you've been in an academic setting, you might need to brush up on some terminology, but the editors did a good job of ensuring everything is broken down and explained fully. A glossary IS included in the back if you're still having trouble with some of the terms. I'd definitely recommend this for anyone pursuing genealogy, whether they actually want to be board certified or if they're just a hobbyist.
